These Homemade Oreo Cookies are chewy, chocolate cookies with a heavenly, rich cream cheese filling in between. They are so simple to make and taste a million times better than the store-bought cookies.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the packaged Oreos you buy at the store, but you just can’t go wrong with a decadent, soft and chocolate homemade version. Especially with the addition of a thick and creamy frosting to perfectly pair with the cookies. 😀

I know boxed cake mixes kind of have a bad rep and when used while baking some people feel it’s not ‘real’ baking or authentic. Of course, anything you make from scratch will probably taste a little better, but when you don’t have the time, cake mixes are perfect to use! Just take these Oreo cookies for example, they are soft, delicious and extra fudgy.

While the Devil’s Food Cake mix is my favorite way to make these, if you’re not the biggest chocolate fan, you can always go a different route. To change things up, you can try other flavors of cake mix. Funfetti, red velvet and vanilla would be just as amazing!

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

CREAM CHEESE FILLING

  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 2 Tablespoons butter softened
  • 1/2 Teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Roll dough into 2 inch balls and place onto an un-greased cookie sheet. Gently press down on dough to flatten slightly. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes. (They wont seem done, but they are!) Remove from oven and let completely cool on the cookie sheet.

FOR CREAM CHEESE FILLING

  • In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, butter and vanilla with a hand mixer until well mixed. Slowly beat in the powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Take one Oreo cookie and frost the bottom with desired amount of filling, top with a second cookie.
  • Store cookies in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

  1. You know what. I love your blog, AND your recipes. Not everyone has the time to spend to make everything from scratch. If it works for you then do you. If other’s don’t like it, why criticize? I’m going to be trying this. I love the simplicity of it, and that it doesn’t have 84784843 ingredients. 😛 Thanks for posting. 😀

  2. I totally agree! I’ve actually made Oreos both ways and they taste better – and not to mention are easier – with using cake mix. Mine is a little different than yours, so I’m excited to try your version. There’s no shame in a little ‘cheating’ every now and then. ESPECIALLY, if it’s delicious!

  3. I like to make a lot of food from scratch because I like the challenge, and I really like to think, “Hey, I just did that all myself!” But the truth is, sometimes I end up throwing a temper tantrum and REALLY wishing I had a box mix in the pantry! And especially knowing that I could make something like THIS with a mix … oooooh la la! These look fab, Holly. Seriously. You make me want about six of them and a huge glass of milk.

  4. Seriously, you use box mixes? C’mon Holly. Okay, I’m just kidding ya, they look fabulous! I use ’em all the time, not usually though what they are intended for (just like you did with these cookies). Sometimes they just make a great base. And sometimes, you just want an easy cake. You go girl.

  5. I couldnt agree with u more Holly! I use box cake mix all the time it saves time money and stress. Keep up the great work!1

  6. Those look great and I love the cream cheese in the frosting! I’m not a fan of boxed cake mixes but not because I feel like it’s “inauthentic” or anything, I just seriously don’t like the taste of the finished product when used alone.

That being said, boxed mixes have saved my life many times and if I have to use them then I doctor it up and they taste perfect!

  7. I am not a cake mix snob, and I think these cookies look really delicious! I always keep a box or two of cake mix in my cupboard for those times that I just want a cake and I want it fast! I’ve bookmarked to make with my grandson. 🙂

  8. Amen Sista! I am completely with you on the boxed cake mixes. I totally use them in so many of my recipes! And I LOVE homemade oreos!!! My favorite cookie of all time!! Great photo too! It’s making me wish I had like 5 of these right now 🙂

  9. What a great idea, Holly! I’m not a fan of icing (the first thing i remove from any cake) but I would love to put vanilla ice cream in the middle for an ice-cream sandwich. It sounds like such a yummy, quick chocolate cookie. You have an awesome blogsite 🙂

  10. Oh, these look fabulous!!! Love the idea of cream cheese filling…and the cake mix shortcut is wonderful, too 🙂

PS…my family is addicted to Oreos, but I think they’re nasty. I could eat yours, though…no problem!

  11. So i am not a cook by any means. i came across your site today looking for fairly easy but good recipes for a beginner like myself. i saw this on the side and laughed! this is one of the few things i do make! (and my fav at that) they are yummy and whoever wants the extra work of “from scratch” let them. i take these to things all the time and ALWAYS get compliments and they are always the first desert to go! anywho thanks for your blog! its great im excited to try some of your recipes this week!

  12. Oh I am so excited…just checked and I have ALL of the ingredients on hand to make these yummy treats!! Woohoo!! Can’t wait to make these tomorrow and surprise my kids when they come home from school.
I love making things from boxed cake mixes and always have several on hand for recipes just like this one.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

  13. I have been meaning to make homemade oreos for at least a year now. These look SO good. It’s only 7 am but I would eat all of these if they were really in front of me!

  14. Holey Moley! Why didn’t I think of this??? I make cookies from a cake mix all the time, but hadn’t thought about putting a filling between them. Brilliant…and no doubt, very tasty. Pinning!!!

  15. These are perfect! I love recipes like this that don’t have a million ingredients or complicated steps. My four year old loves to help, especially when she can actually do steps by herself. And of course, they’re really yummy!!

    1. Yes! I tried it and it worked great! I did add 3 tablespoons of flour since the the box said to add that for more cake like brownies. They might need one more minute in the oven.

  16. I know this post is from a long time ago, but I’m wanting to try to make these. Do they turn out crunchy like store bought Oreos?
